“To the elders among you…Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them — not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humbled.” – 1 Peter 5:1-5
The above verses are very important and revelant today. Before I start let me just say that all of God’s word is extremely important revelant. I just want to take a look a few of his important words. In the church today and even in our own families there is a lot of lack of respect from young people to elders and elders to young people. From my understanding back in the day elders looking out for the younger people even if that person wasn’t their child or apart of their family. There was also a lot of young people who looked up to their elders and sought out advice from their wisdom.
What happened??? Have we gotten so selfish and judgmental as people that we can care less about helping and looking after them. I am talking about the young and the old. I see so many older people out here who genuinely and lovingly try to “be shepherds of God’s flock” but the younger folk are blatantly disrespectful. One the other side I see my fellow young people who are lost. Instead of them receiving the wisdom that their elders have to offer, the elders offer their judgmental attitude and opinions instead. Again what happened? Why do young people and older people alike feel like they “know it all”? God says in his word:
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” Ephesians 5:21
God didn’t call us to fight, be mean, judge or be unloving with one another. Our problem is pride. “Pride keeps the older people from listening and trying to understand the younger generation and vise versa.(Life Application Bible)”. We can all learn from each other if we take the time to listen, humble ourselves and respect one another.
I encourage you, whoever you are that is reading this blog post to study 1 Peter 5:1-5 and Titus 2:1-15. Go to God, pastors, priest, parents and grandparents and have them go over these verses and this topic with you.
God Bless
